What is proprioception? Learn how body awareness affects movement, focus and calm, plus practical ways to support children at home or school each day.
A child crashes into the couch after school, presses hard with their pencil until it tears the page, or constantly leans on the people beside them. These behaviours can look confusing from the outside, but they may be a child’s way of seeking information from their body. So, what is proprioception? It is the sense that helps us know where our body is, how it is moving and how much force to use, even when we are not looking.
It works quietly in the background when we walk up stairs, carry a full drink, button a shirt or sit upright at a desk. When proprioceptive information is harder to process or a child needs more of it to feel organised, everyday tasks can take extra effort. Understanding this sense can help families, educators and support people respond with practical support rather than simply asking a child to “sit still”.
Proprioception is often called our body-awareness sense. Special receptors in our muscles, joints and connective tissues send messages to the brain about body position, pressure, movement and force. Together, those messages help us move safely and efficiently.
Think about picking up a cardboard box. Before you lift it, your body needs to judge whether it is empty or full. As you carry it, you automatically adjust your grip and muscle strength. That is proprioception at work. The same sense helps a child climb playground equipment, use scissors, throw a ball, navigate a busy classroom and avoid bumping into the doorframe.
Proprioception works alongside other sensory systems, including touch, vision, balance and hearing. No sense operates completely alone. A child who is tired, anxious, excited or overwhelmed may find it harder to use body-awareness information effectively, even if they usually manage a task well.
Every person has different sensory preferences. Some children seem to seek strong proprioceptive input because it helps them feel grounded, alert or calm. They may enjoy jumping, climbing, pushing, pulling, carrying, chewing or wrapping themselves tightly in a blanket. These are not automatically “naughty” behaviours. Often, they are attempts to get the body input they need.
Other children may avoid certain movement or pressure experiences. They might be cautious on climbing equipment, dislike rough-and-tumble play, use very little force when writing or become distressed when bumped in a crowd. Some children shift between seeking and avoiding depending on the day, environment or demand placed on them.

You may hear therapists and educators use the phrase “heavy work”. This means activities that involve resistance through the muscles and joints, such as pushing a loaded laundry basket, carrying books, digging in the garden or animal walks across the floor.
For many children, this kind of work provides clear proprioceptive feedback. It can support regulation before a challenging transition, help some children settle for table-based learning or offer a constructive outlet when their body is asking for movement. It is not a cure-all, and it will not suit everyone. The best activity is one that is safe, enjoyable and matched to the child’s needs.
Body-awareness needs often show up during the busiest parts of the day. A child may become more crashy after holding themselves together at school. Another may struggle to get dressed because judging where their arms and legs are feels difficult. Homework can be hard when sitting still requires more effort than the task itself.
At home, small opportunities for purposeful movement can fit naturally into routines. Before getting dressed, a child might push hands firmly against a wall, do a few animal walks or help carry light items to the table. After school, helping to bring in groceries, pulling a wheeled bag or building a cushion obstacle course may be more useful than expecting immediate quiet sitting.
In classrooms, movement does not need to mean disruption. Carrying a stack of workbooks, wiping the whiteboard, moving chairs with permission, stretching hands together or using a suitable fidget during listening time can give some students the input they need to stay engaged. What helps one child concentrate may distract another, so observation matters more than copying a strategy because it worked elsewhere.
Sensory tools are most helpful when they solve a real problem. If a child chews clothing, a purpose-made chewable aid may offer a safer option while meeting the need for jaw input. If they squeeze pencils too hard, a comfortable pencil grip and opportunities for hand-strength activities may help. If they seek pressure while seated, a lap weight or resistance-based seating option may be worth considering with appropriate guidance.
The goal is not to fill every moment with sensory equipment. It is to give children practical, respectful ways to meet their needs and take part in daily life. Safety should always come first. Choose products designed for their intended use, follow age and supervision guidance, and check regularly for wear or damage. Weighted products and any tool that restricts movement need particular care. They should never be used to force calm, prevent a child from leaving a space or replace attentive adult support.
Rather than assuming a behaviour has one cause, become a gentle detective. Notice what happens before the behaviour, what the child does, and what changes afterwards. Does jumping before school make getting out the door easier? Does a chewing tool help during car trips but not during reading? Does a busy shopping centre lead to more bumping, tears or movement-seeking?
A simple pattern can reveal more than a single incident. Keep notes for a week or two, especially around transitions, meals, learning tasks, sleep and community outings. Include what helped, not only what was difficult. This creates useful information to share with teachers, therapists and other support people.
It also helps to ask the child, in a way that matches their communication style. They may say they feel “wiggly”, “too full of energy”, “squashed”, “floaty” or simply “not right”. Some children will not have words for the feeling, but they may show you through choices, gestures or changes in behaviour. Respecting those messages builds trust.
Professional support can be valuable when sensory or coordination differences are limiting a child’s independence, safety, learning, friendships or confidence. An occupational therapist can assess how sensory processing, motor skills and daily tasks interact, then recommend strategies tailored to the individual child.
Seek timely advice if a child is frequently injured, has a sudden or significant change in coordination, experiences pain, or if you have concerns about developmental progress. Sensory needs can occur alongside autism, ADHD, anxiety, developmental coordination differences and many other experiences, but they can also be present without a formal diagnosis. Support does not need to wait for a label.
A child’s need to move, push, chew, climb or press is communication. When we meet that communication with curiosity, safe choices and patience, we make more room for them to feel capable in their own body.
